Abstract: Angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL4) is a recently discovered multifunctional protein involved in the regulation of glucose, lipid metabolism, angiogenesis, vascular permeability and other biological processes. ANGPTL4 is closely linked with the mechanism of neovascular ocular fundus disease such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusive disease, and age-related macular degeneration and so on. The expression of ANGPTL4 is up-regulated by high glucose and hypoxia, which induces a series of pathological events occurred including angiogenesis and increase vascular permeability. It is expected to become a diagnostic biomarker and potential therapeutic target for neovascular fundus diseases in the future. (Int Rev Ophthalmol, 2022, 46:  535-540)
