Abstract:

Pyroptosis is a form of inflammatory programmed cell death that is specifically activated by Caspase
-1 or Caspase-4/5/11. It is mediated by canonical inflammasome pathway and non-canonical inflammasome pathway.Pyroptosis involves in the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, nervous system diseases and autoimmune diseases. The canonical inflammasome pathway is activated in retinal lesions, and inhibition of inflammasome and downstream molecules may ameliorate retinal damage. Therefore, pyroptosis has become a potential therapeutic target for retinopathy.  (Int Rev Ophthalmol, 2018, 42: 115-118)
