Abstract: The pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy(DR) is still unclear. During the occurrence and development process of DR, retinal glial cells(including astrocytes, Müller cells and microglial cells) react becoming activated and undergo a series of changes: glial fibrillary acidic protein expression, decreased glutamic acid metabolism, up-regulated aldose reductase activity, increased oxidative stress, secretion of pro-inflammatory signals. Excessive activation of glial cells plays an important role in the DR course.(Int Rev Ophthalmol, 2021, 45: 483-487)
