Abstract:

With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and its implication in medical field in recent years, AI in ophthalmology has been a trending topic. In case of major vision-threatening diseases, like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration, AI-related researches have emerged expansively. Despite much promising research currently being undertaken, general issues exist, like being lack of transparency, clear reporting to facilitate replicability, and clear demonstrations of effectiveness. This article described the challenges and unmet needs for AI application in major eye diseases and the common conditions in the field, and additionally introduced guidelines to regulate AI researches in ophthalmology and health care.
